ALEXEI GERMAN Jr
He was born on 4 September 1976 in Saint Petersburg. He is the son of Russian filmmaker Alexei Yurievich German and screenwriter Svetlana Karmalita. In 2001 he received the degree in film directing from The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), workshop of S.Soloviev and V.Rubinchik). While studying at VGIK he made several short films: THE FLAG, A BIG AUTUMNAL FIELD, LITTLE FOOLS. He worked at the Lenfilm film studio.
In 2003 he won the national award “Nika” of the Russian Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences in the "Discovery of the Year" category for his debut feature-length film THE LAST TRAIN. This film was also acclaimed by Western film critics and selected for programs of international film festivals in Venice and Rotterdam. The next film by Alexei German – GARPASTUM, released in 2005, was shown in the main selection of the Venice Film Festival, and also received the “Nika” award (the second one for Alexei German Jr.) in the "Best director" category.
